Week 06 - Into the Light

Into the Light

I did not intend to return to a scene so recently included in the project as the tunnel provided the setting a scant two weeks ago.

That image captured the entrance to the tunnel, while this week was the exit of the same structure. So why return to it so soon?

Because I could not recreate this photograph despite revisiting the scene any time during the project's life. One of the constraints of this project is that it needs to include an image taken that week.

The exiting family is barely discernible at an exposure of 1/5 of a second with slight camera movement. I know this intentional camera movement (ICM) is not everyone's bag. And ideally, something needs to be in focus. However, I didn't realize how slow the shutter speed was.

Black and white photography, in subtle ways, allows more latitude in manipulating reality. In this case, from a family outing to an exodus into the light.

Not wanting to repeat the setting from two weeks ago, I figured I would bypass this one. Then last night, I re-watched an interview with the prominent photographer Keith Carter. He talks about the role imperfection plays in our photography. He states that the image he is best known for, "Fireflies," was an accident.

I changed my mind about the photograph.
