Over a quarter of the year complete, a return to a motif from week # 01 - symbols of a fortified city. The fortification of Elvas, Portugal, a garrison city, is now a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Turrets would serve as a defensive position, with an expansive view to fend off invaders. The birds resting upon the turret and the one approaching offer a more peaceful perspective.
The timeless element of a 17th-century structure lends itself to the unique nature of a black and white photograph.
Diagonal lines add energy to a square composition. The downward slope from left to right is often perceived as positive energy, while an upward ascent from left to right is negative. A climb suggests struggle.
I pass here often, and I found the layers of cloud added depth and scale to the scene on this occasion. A bank of high, middle, and low clouds becomes more evident in black and white.
