Week 20 - Woodland in Spring

Woodland in Spring

Photography allows us to capture and compare instants of time. Those moments look and feel different. They each offer a unique view of the setting. The changing seasons, of course, present a dramatic shift in the aesthetic of a scene.

In week #2, a relatively bare landscape, softened by snow, presented a skeletal view of a small stream running into woodland. Eighteen weeks later, early winter has become late spring.

The setting is no longer skeletal but plush. The overhead canopy of trees deepens the shadows. The abundant leaves hide the limbs that were so dominant in winter.

The challenges of black and white photography are also its strength. The winter image is not so different in color or black and white. Unfortunately, vibrant green is so dominant in the spring image that the details are lost. The shape, form, and texture are lost.

However, the changes are more subtle in black and white and require a deeper study. Perhaps Autumn will be an opportunity for yet another mood. Color is such a component of Autumn. I am curious how time will portray its absence.
