Week 27 - Abstract and Illusion
Abstracts are well out of my comfort zone. The scene here is not one I would typically photograph. However, a quick search tells me that 'repeating pattern' is, in fact, a popular subject in photography. Its popularity may be a statement about our times - seeking order in chaos.
The setting is Republic Plaza (Praça da República), built in the 16th century and located in the central plaza of the medieval walled city of Elvas, Portugal
.
This abstract presents a unique optical illusion. The optic in question is the lens of the eye and not the camera. So to the eye, you would need to step up and over these forms on the ground. In reality, of course, it is entirely flat. The three-dimensional patterns emerge from the basalt, marble, and sandstone cubes.
It is a scene that nicely lends itself to black-and-white capture for typical reasons. First, it is about shape and not color. Contrast, tone, and texture are dominant.
However, the most significant challenge with abstract photography is what it is missing — the photographer. We bring something of ourselves to the images we make. At least for me, the abstraction removes that.
