Ideally, this week would have featured an alternative setting. Yet, while it has obvious similarities to last week's image, it is a much easier photo to compose. So, while last week was about the challenge of clutter, this week is about the simplicity of a lone tree.

Given the ongoing heat wave, I typically walk in the late evening. I can't help but notice the light streaming across the landscape at that hour of the day. The grass in front of the tree is painted with light while the shadows fall around it.

I no longer resist my propensity to photograph trees. As is the case here, the object is the tree, but the subject is the light. The light at this evening time appears to be coming from within the tree, not upon it. The light offers feelings of comfort and quiet. However, the glow is fleeting. The light was too harsh only a few moments before. While only minutes later, the grass was in total shadow.

The scene is rich green and gold, but light and shadow present strong contrast in black and white. A lone tree can leave the eye without a path centered in a square frame. Here though, the tree trunk is off-center, providing some visual energy.
