Week 42 - Dusk

Dusk

We are well into autumn as the calendar marches on. So, with the earlier darkness comes a sense that the year is winding down. With the progression of time, several subjects recur throughout the year—this image among them. I prefer to consider them recurring themes rather than scenes, although the settings may be similar. A thought rather than a thing.

Here the theme is rest and silence as darkness descends on a working field. Three trees sit in the twilight as the last rays of the setting sun rake across the foreground rocks. In addition, the light also touches the rightmost edge of the functional structure. Finally, a truck sitting at the edge of the frame suggests this is not a place of rest.

The setting is a place I have walked past many evenings. The more familiar we are with a scene, the more likely we will observe that the moment is unique. The subjects become inconspicuous, and we recognize that what has changed is the mood.

While this ongoing project is a conscious appreciation and exploration of black-and-white photography, this image brings me back to the world of color. There is a beautiful transition across the sky from blue to orange. Fittingly, however, the darkness accented in monochrome heightens the sense of the work-day ending and perhaps a broader change of season and connection to the land.
