Week 16 - What If?

Out to Dry

While walking through the old section of Elvas, Portugal, this setting screamed color. The vibrant colors of the items on the clothesline against the textured wall feel like a tapestry.

One of the best questions you can ask yourself as a photographer is 'what if?' In this case - how would an image be rendered in black and white when its primary subject is color?

While it is evident what the scene is, the conversion to black and white adds a level of abstraction. The textured upper wall becomes sky, albeit a bland one. The more darkly textured wall takes on the look of grass. The bending crack on the right represents a distant tree.

Perhaps all a stretch, but that's where 'what-if' often leads, leaving room for imagination.

While constraints can be liberating, in this case, I feel the square crop isn't ideal. The clothes on the line represent a horizontal perspective and are likely best expressed in a more compatible aspect ratio.
